From the CTV article:

There’s been a lot of buzz over the last few weeks about strange sounds being heard in the atmosphere. People around the world and here at home have reported hearing some bizarre noises. The latest were recorded in the Battlefords last weekend.

Ian Hamilton, North Battleford’s mayor, says he can’t explain it. “What I experienced was a scraping sound, like a snowplow.”

Mike Halstead, a North Battleford resident, was lying in bed when his phone rang. Calls and text messages came in from his friends, each reporting strange noises. “That’s when the goose bumps got me and I thought ‘that’s awfully strange’.”

It’s now days after and the city is still abuzz with talk about the sounds. Everyone has his or her own theory. But the phenomenon has stretched beyond North Battleford. Similar experiences were reported in Saskatoon, northern Saskatchewan, and parts of the USA and Europe.

Could antennas in North Battleford be the cause? A professor that the University of Saskatchewan thinks so.

CTV went to a professor at University of Saskatchewan for the “rational explanation.” Professor Jean-Pierre St. Maurice told them that it’s very natural, and there is nothing to worry about.

St. Maurice said, “Somehow they are picking up noise from an electrical antenna that is there. That is electromagnetic noise.”

An antenna. Really?

Here’s a little update on the story. Someone has taken the time to catalogue the locations of where these strange sounds have been heard. For what it is worth:

There is a lot of buzz going around on what these sounds could be. Some say HAARP others claim aliens. This should be an interesting year to say the least.

My son and I heard it too around 1830EST over Sherbrooke, Quebec. It sounded like a cross between a loud jet with engine problems and a large machine scraping or moving rock. It lasted 2 minutes or so and didn’t seem to be moving. This was the evening of Jan 29 or 30.
